Eating Earthy
Posted on April 28, 2010
For Earth day I had planned on doing several things with the kids to show how we can be more gentle to the Earth and about growing plants and vegetables, but imagine that Mother Nature making it rain and spoiling our day. I mean really, I was trying to be on her team! I found some cool things on different blogs I read and ended up making some green purchases that will not only save us some cash, but save us some unnecessary trash! One of my favorite changes that I have made over the past year was converting to those insulated zipper grocery bags…you know the ones hanging in the aisles at the supermarket. I love them and have about five that suit us on a regular shopping trip. I can cram A TON in those bags and it makes unloading so easy too. Enough about me, more about my kids right? One of the fun things I did on Earth Day was taking them to the local farm’s dairy store. I let them each pick out any fruits that they were willing to try, encouraging them to go for something new. Turns out we like pears, apricots and mango in addition to the usual bananas, apples, grapes, strawberries, raspberries and cantaloupe. My fridge was definitely stuffed to the max. The biggest treat was I let them use as much whipped cream as they could for the 15 minute all-you-can-eat fest, which I rarely ever, ever do. My sons especially love all fruit and need no additives to enjoy them, but who DOESN’T want to take advantage of special treats when they can? And it was definitely the only way my daughter was going to venture outside of her tiny, small box of “Foods Sam Eats”. Immediately following our treat we were to head outside and do some seed planting, but that is when the rain came down and wet everything just enough to keep us indoors. Hope you all had did something Green this past week!
