My grandmother hates her photo taken. Always has, but always posed reluctantly in photos. Sometimes she even broke out a smile. In the last few years I have tried to get my three kids sitting nicely with my grandmother for a photo. Once a year I try this task and each year someone is crying, looking scared or sitting on top of one another. This year was much more successful with all smiles, but really silly and not the fuzzy warm grandmotherly photo you would REALLY choose to have. It was a bit after this moment that I went to put my camera away and caught my son sitting on my grandmother’s lap. It was an emotional moment for me because my other grandparents have all passed on and she was the only grandparent who got to see me grow up, get married and have children. On this particular day I asked my grandmom, who is known as “Nan”, questions about her growing up and meeting my grandfather and how life was as a newlywed. I learned things that I never knew about her even after all of this time. She is really a spectacular woman who raised five children on her own for the most part, as my grandfather was fatally injured in an accident when my mom was just a child. She comments on how she doesn’t get how us kids (referring to my cousins and I) do it nowadays forgetting the burdens she had herself as a mother. So with that all being said, I was so happy to get a photo of my Nan and my son playing his little alphabet toy. I am also so happy that Nan has no computer knowledge whatsoever and will not know that her photo has been plastered on the internet.

If you are a scrapbooking addict or just a photo junkie, it is likely you have heard the term “365″ or “1/52″ before. Its a very challenging task of taking one photograph every day of the calendar year or one for every week of the year. Its a way to document your year’s events, your children’s growth or even your own growth. There are no set rules and everyone does it differently. I had attempted this for quite a few months a year ago but it fell through on a day I was too sick to care (if I remember correctly!) However, falling in love with many of the series I had seen friends do, I took on the challenge yet again. No, I’m not going to post a photo every day here, but I will post one once a week. Every Monday I will post a photo that best highlighted my previous week! Today my friends, is that Monday! So without further ado, here is my photo of the week!

As some of you may or may not know, we are undergoing some renovations here and somewhere in the midst of the already chaotic mix we decided to clear out some of the attic. I found a bin of my most favorite possessions and drug it down for some reminiscing. I have tons of letters, postcards, greeting cards, apparently my first pair of sneakers, yearbooks and more in this box. I have love letters from 5th grade up from boys that I still love to read as geeky as it sounds. All of these things make me smile and each time bring back new memories that I had once forgotten. Thanks to the infamous Facebook, I have reconnected with some of those lost friends and we just picked up right where we left off. My kids had a blast tearing through the box themselves. My daughter made it a point to tell me how different I looked in photos and my favorite comment was, “This picture is where you look like you now” (pointing to my 9th grade class photo). I wish my sweet girl! I wish!

Happy Monday and Happy Martin Luther King Day my friends!

And finally, this is L of the G family. Photogenic is an understatement when it comes to her. I just have to say that when I was a teenager, I never would have dreamed of having photos taken of me outside of the typical school auditorium and back drop. I truly believe that every teenager, girl or boy, should have one opportunity to have photos taken in a relaxed, casual environment. They need to see how beautiful they are and that the flaws “they see” on a daily basis are actually not flaws, but perfect characteristics that make them who they are. I came home from this shoot, put on my Itunes and edited away nonstop. It was infectious because each expression just made me go “wow”. I think L looks stunning, knows how to accentuate her greatest features and really has shown what a mature young woman she has become. So enough chatter, let’s get to the photos!
